{"id":829,"date":"2016-10-30T17:40:05","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T00:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ukuleletonya.com\/blog\/?p=829"},"modified":"2016-10-30T18:07:39","modified_gmt":"2016-10-31T01:07:39","slug":"a-first-birthday-visit-for-my-ukulele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ukuleletonya.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/a-first-birthday-visit-for-my-ukulele","title":{"rendered":"A first birthday visit for my ukulele"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Salmon swim upstream to return to the home of their birth.<\/p>\n<p>My very special tenor ukulele can\u2019t swim\u2026but for its first birthday, I thought I\u2019d take it back to its birthplace. Only we\u2019d be flying. Hawaii is simply too far for me to swim either\u2014especially with an ukulele case strapped to my back.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Over the 12 months since I\u2019d acquired my koa beauty from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moorebettahukes.com\" target=\"_blank\">Moore Bettah Ukuleles<\/a>, I\u2019d emailed Chuck a few times with questions about humidity and wood care and, well, just those new parent type of questions.<\/p>\n<p>Why not, Chuck wrote once, come experience \u201ctheir\u201d side of Hawai\u2019i Island on our next visit? He suggested a little oceanfront cottage nearby took vacation renters\u2026hmmm\u2026maybe?<\/p>\n<p>What you need to know, though, is that Chuck\u2019s neighborhood has no wells for water\u2014so it\u2019s \u201ccatchment\u201d water only. We arrived at the cottage late at night after flying in to Kona side (Note to self: next time fly in to Hilo and save the drive over Saddle Road). I hope not!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We marveled at the fruit briefly before tumbling into bed. Visions of koa ukulele, coconuts and bumpy unknown tropical fruits danced in my head. The breeze and an evening rainstorm came up, rustling the fronds and resulting in the deep thumps of ripe coconuts hitting the moist soil (Second note to self: Do not park the rental car anywhere underneath coconut trees). No Photoshop. Really.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like most visitors to Hawai\u2019i we awoke \u201cearly\u201d due to hurtling through multiple time zones the day before. I looked up. There was Chuck, beside his pickup at the gate entrance to the cottage. We hollered him in and he bounded up the outside stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing the tourist thing, playing ukulele on the lanai, huh?\u201d he laughed. Geesh, and I\u2019d thought it such an original occupation that morning\u2026<\/p>\n<p>And so began our visit to return to the land of my ukulele\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>We swam at Warm Pond, we snorkeled nearby in a collection of tidepools and we enjoyed a Wednesday night at Uncle Robert\u2019s in Kalapana (definitely a community happening you don\u2019t want to miss).<\/p>\n<p>Chuck and Bonnie are the kind of people that make you feel at home, even though the surroundings are really nothing like your home. Maybe I&#8217;d asked about a high G soprano&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chuck and Bonnie treated us as if we were old friends (and sometimes that\u2019s a lot better than being family!) and joined us on some of our explorations in the area. And Doctor Chuck gave my special tenor a one-year checkup, pronouncing it healthy in every way. He buffed it on a polishing wheel of some sort (I couldn\u2019t watch; all that spinning, all that power, all that possibility of the thing ruining my ukulele!) and he deftly installed two strap buttons for me (next adventure: a quest to fabric stores to discover the &#8220;just-right&#8221; strap material).<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, I got some wonderful Christmas shopping done right there in Opihikao, thanks to Bonnie\u2019s jewelry designs.
