Here\u2019s the deal: I like ukuleles (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbet you couldn\u2019t tell, huh?). I travel to Hawai\u2019i. I attend ukulele workshops around the US. I spend inordinate amounts of time on ukulele websites (but, of course, never<\/em> during work hours\u2026).<\/p>\n

My accountant noted our travels once while looking over our finances. \u201cWhat\u2019s with all that ukulele stuff?\u201d he asked. \u201cIf you like \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcem so much, why not start a business of some sort dealing with ukuleles?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hmmm\u2026why not?\"img_5043\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As it is, I already carve out hours of vacation time searching for talented craftspeople who can make me fun ukulele specialties. I mean, doesn\u2019t everyone who visits Hawai\u2019i go in search of people who carve bone pendants in the shape of a four-stringed instrument???<\/p>\n

Oh. They don\u2019t?<\/p>\n

All the better then, that you know me. Because I\u2019ve done just that. For years I collected all kinds of ukulele \u201cthings.\u201d I generally eschew (great word, huh?) the mass-produced items. I mean, just because a wood object has four tuning pins and a somewhat bulbous shape doesn\u2019t mean it really looks like an ukulele earring, pendant, keychain or whatever. I didn\u2019t want that kind of stuff.<\/p>\n

And I figured you wouldn\u2019t either.<\/p>\n

\"ss_earrings_heart\"<\/a>So I went back to my very own collection of my favorite ukulele things. Things I\u2019ve found in odd little corners of the islands. Things I already own and wear because they\u2019re just a bit different from the typical ukulele gifty items. Things that are special because you\u2019re not going to find them anywhere else.<\/p>\n

In short, they\u2019re my ukulele treasures.<\/p>\n

And, to follow through on my accountant\u2019s advice, I\u2019m selling them online. You see, that gives me a \u201creason\u201d to keep attending all these ukulele festivals. And for trips over the Pacific to discover new craftspeople on Hawai\u2019i Island or in Honolulu or even on a remote South Pacific shore.<\/p>\n

Some things are truly limited quantities\u2014and I\u2019m not just saying that because I’ve suddenly turned\"ss_pendant_heart\"<\/a> into a used car salesman (apologies to all you ukulele players who happen to do that for a living; it’s just a saying, you know…). For example, I have some carved shell items by a talented craftsman who\u2019s pushing his mid-70s and I\u2019m not sure how much longer he\u2019s going to want to carve ukulele pendants for me. But they\u2019re so very delightful! I guess when he gives me the word, I’ll just have to sell the last one he ‘s made then look for new treasures…<\/p>\n
