That we vacation there as often as we can (not often enough!) and that we have numerous friends there (and, yes, most of them are in some way \u201cukulele people\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, I think, I\u2019m on the receiving end of so many questions lately about \u201cthe volcano.\u201d I\u2019ve searched out a few links which I refer to so I can stay informed\u2014and I\u2019m sharing my favorites with you here.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: I prefer these sources to simply doing a Google search for \u201cHawai\u2019i volcano\u201d because they\u2019re more local (nothing like getting alarmist headlines from a Google search and then realizing they\u2019re from a story in a sensationalist English newspaper dated 15 days earlier\u2026).<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>First person accounts, news and videos:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Mileka Lincoln is doing a simply incredible job with on-the-ground reporting about this situation for HawaiiNewsNow (television). But you don\u2019t need to tune in to tv to see her reports. She posts multiple times a day on her Facebook account. No need to be a Facebook \u201cmember\u201d to watch them, either. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/milekalincoln.hnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Go here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ikaika Marzo is a Pahoa-area resident that is documenting the enormous scale of this event within his community. Count on videos, interviews with neighbors, photos and a real world account of what it\u2019s like in the area. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ikaika.marzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Go here.<\/a>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>A great map for details&#8211;updated daily with lava flow and fissure activity:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The Island of Hawai\u2019i is big\u2014the biggest in the state\u2014but many people have a hard time figuring out where the Lower East Rift Zone is that\u2019s spouting off all the lava. Hint: Only a tiny portion of the island is at risk for lava inundation and volcanic activity right now (if you don\u2019t count the earthquakes). For those in this area, it is certainly devastating. Homes have disappeared under mountains of lava, roads are covered and other byways are barely passable due to cracks. Utilities such as phone, water and electricity are sometimes gone entirely.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the sensationalized news, the eruption doesn&#8217;t affect all of Hawai\u2019i Island. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1CvBhH9wEeztBrqYbsGDi4YjU1k1QH5AL&amp;ll=19.436358386624207%2C-154.88528603254434&amp;z=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Look at this map<\/strong><\/a> and you\u2019ll be able to better put it in perspective. What&#8217;s especially valuable about this map is that it\u2019s updated daily and includes all the fissures, flows and volcanic activity, overlaid on a Google map. It&#8217;s on my &#8220;favorites&#8221; in my bookmarks bar for a quick check of status.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>First person accounts and videos:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>For official and scientific news, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">go here<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to read articles and see photos from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. This includes webcams in the various caldera areas, maps, information about earthquakes and lots of data, if you\u2019re so inclined.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From a &#8220;local&#8221; news standpoint:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>This is an <a href=\"http:\/\/bigislandnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>online newspaper for Hawai&#8217;i Island<\/strong><\/a> that&#8217;s featuring stories reflecting the human element of this\u00a0volcanic event.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>This screenshot of the above-linked map shows where we usually vacation (it\u2019s about one mile from what was an active lava flow in May).
