He Mele Aloha
Assorted authors
Book; companion music DVD (MP3 format only) may also be available. He Mele Aloha: A Hawaiian Songbook is a collection of over 260 songs, listed alphabetically, about 40 of which are hapa-haole songs. It is intended to encourage the tradition of kanikapila. The emphasis is on accurate Hawaiian lyrics and translation. Simple chording and fingering for the ukulele is shown for each song. The lyrics are large for easy reading. It is in a workbook format, with ring binding, large print and room to make notes. Kanikapila: The word kanikapila, literally "play music," has come to mean gathering together informally to sing and play. It was not so long ago that kanikapila was part of our daily lives in Hawai'i. Over the last generation music has moved from the garage party to the concert stage. It has become something to listen to rather than participate in. There is a sense today that singing is reserved for those who are really "good" at it. Still, many people yearn to kanikapila. Translations: English translations favor a less than literal approach, as the translator tried to capture not only the specifics of the language but the essence of the song. Existing translations were edited in order to provide a level of consistency, and were sometimes adjusted to reflect more recent understandings of the poetry. When translations were not available, they have been written anew. Melody and phrasing is not provided-you must know the song to sing it. Most of these songs have been recorded, and one purpose of this book is to encourage support of Hawai'i's composers and entertainers.

Kika Kila Meets Kihoalu
Bob Brozman, Ledward Kaapana
Bob Brozman, who plays duets on National steel with Kaapana, comes to Hawaiian music via the blues and other traditional mainland folk forms. His work has a busyness, in the best possible sense of the term—the guy's all over the place, though he can also lay back and keep it simple when he wants to; he also has a prickliness that many island steel players don't show. He brings out the best in Kaapana, who plays with a fuller, more virile tone than usual. They reach further back than most of their peers for material and arrangements, too, so this set has the straightforward, benignly sentimental feel of the earliest recorded Hawaiian music. —John Morthland

Bravo to Brittni Paiva on her third and latest release - Brittni! It s hard to believe that this 18-year old could produce another CD in barely a year that would equal or better her last CD, Hear, a 2006 Na Hoku Hanohano nominee for Best Instrumental Album of the Year and winner of the Hawaii Music Award s Best Ukulele Album of the Year! Two vocal tracks on her latest CD reveal that strings are not Brittni s only voice. One track, a beautifully rendered Pua Karauna, is a duet with her singing coach, the legendary Melveen Leed. Brittni features four original compositions, one of which is about Honoli i, a popular surfing spot on the outskirts of Hilo. Once you know this, the music and title Riding Honoli i evoke a wonderful visual image grab the board, drive the jeep down to catch a few waves. Gazing is another beautifully executed original composition. Inspired initially by the starry Big Island skies, the solo ukulele captures the imagery of a solitary figure gazing at an awesome expanse. Included in this CD are two tracks originally written for three violins Pachelbel s famous Canon in D for 3 violins and bass accompaniment; and Michael McLean s Csardas for 3 violins and piano. This prodigiously talented teen said she was looking forward to continuing to demonstrate the versatility of the ukulele by incorporating many different styles of music on this instrument. In this CD, she has accomplished just that! A multi-talented musician who is known for her instrumental dexterity and strength, Brittni is committed to perpetuating the art of ki ho alu (slackkey guitar). In this CD, she displays her masterful command of ki ho alu by delivering a lovely rendition of Mauna Loa. Guest musicians include well-known bassist Nathan Aweau and drummer Wendell Ching, who also co-produced Brittni. The assortment of songs on this latest CD, which encompasses many eras and a variety of genres, is sure to be a hit with a wide range of audience.

Ukulele Chord Genius
Bruce Dean
Book. This book doesn't get into specific songs at all, or strumming techniques. It simply walks you through a process that drastically increases the number of chords you can play and, more importantly, helps you understand completely how chords are built and named, so you can become so familiar with your fretboard that you can put together new chords and play them in a variety of positions, as the occasion requires. The first 12 pages of this 72-page book (8.5x11 format, and spiral-bound to lie flat) are basic enough for even the rank beginner, starting with open chords, chord groups for practicing and a checklist for clear chord sounds. Section II gets into moveable or barre chord forms, again with chord pairs to practice making the changes.
Section III on advanced chords is the meat of the book — packed with chord theory that is always rooted in the down-to-earth practice of actually playing the ukulele. Dean's approach is to start with a brief regard in the direction of finger patterns for playing major scales on the uke, which he calls "our most powerful partner for defining chords." He shows how the chord triads are built from the scales. It's simple and obvious enough information once you understand it, yet this is the first ukulele instruction book I've come across that lays it all out for the neophyte in easy-to-understand detail. He shows how major chords are modified to make minor, diminished, augmented and suspended chords.

Gently Weeps
Jake Shimabukuro
You'll forget all the Tiny Tim, Don Ho, and Hawaiian-music jokes about the ukulele when you hear Gently Weeps, which leaves behind the Roaring Twenties strum and plinky-dink sound of most such music. Jake Shimabukuro sets the tone with the lead-off track from which he takes the album's title, George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," unfolding the vulnerable undertow of Harrison's epic lament. A string of covers follows, as Shimabukuro touches the serene with Schubert's "Ave Maria," evokes a Japanese koto on a Zen-like version of "Sakura," and turns "The Star-Spangled Banner" into a lament. But Shimabukuro's original tunes are just as full of plucked nuance, especially "Heartbeat Dragon," where he uses a slight delay to create a quietly joyful Celtic air. However, don't think it's all wistful melancholy. Shimabukuro whips it out on original tracks like "Let's Dance," alternating hard rhythmic chops with flamenco-like strums. His take on Erroll Garner's "Misty" is a little jive, though I'm sure the hot jazz middle-section pumps the crowds up. Chick Corea's "Spain" fares much better and still scores high on the flash quotient. You just can't keep a fret-burner down, even when his fretboard is toy-sized. You can't keep the Hawaiian out either. Its gentle sway turns up on the sweetly laconic "Angel." A few bonus tracks of generic fusion at the end detract from the solo purity and intimate mood that Shimabukuro creates, but Gently Weeps is a joy until then. —John Diliberto
Peace Love Ukulele
Jake Shimabukuro
It's rare for a young musician to earn comparisons to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. It's even harder to find an artist who has entirely redefined an instrument by his early thirties. But Jake Shimabukuro (she-ma-boo-koo-row) has already accomplished these feats, and more, in a little over a decade of playing and recording music. As the San Francisco Gate recently posited about the Hawaiian musician: "The sounds the boyish 33-year old wrings from his ukulele...are unlike anything else in the history of the instrument."
Yes, the ukulele. In the hands of Shimabukuro, the traditional Hawaiian instrument of four strings and two octaves is stretched and molded into a complex and bold new musical force. On an album like his new Peace Love Ukulele,' Jake and his "uke" effortlessly (it seems) mix jazz, rock, classical, traditional Hawaiian music and folk, creating a sound that's both technically masterful and emotionally powerful...and utterly unique in the music world.

Mel Bay Uke Ballads : A Treasury of 25 Love Songs Old and New
Ian Whitcomb
Book with CD. In this wonderful treasure Ian Whitcomb shows how to handle the uke in such a romantic way that the gently murmuring strums emerge to act as a sweet stream of accompaniment upon which one's vocals can float along smoothly and pleasingly. All of the classic ballads included in this book were originally published before the ukulele established itself as an instrument to be taken seriously by the pop industry, before it became the 1920's equivalent of the rock guitar. The music on the companion compact disc is performed by Ian Whitcomb and his various bands and orchestras. The music is written in standard notation with chord symbols and fretboard diagrams for soprano or tenor uke in standard (G-C-E-A) tuning. Lyrics are also included.
The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music
Victor L. Wooten
Book. 275 pages. This one came our way with a strong recommendation: "This book is not about ukulele but is everything about playing the ukulele." A "guide" through the musical journey of learning to play your instrument of choice.
